Five Workplace Wellness Tips

Last week I visited Exeter CoLab to host a day of 30 minute Traditional Thai Yoga Massage sessions for employees at the city centre charity hub. I brought my kit and my practice to this space in order to extend the benefits of Thai Yoga Massage to busy people in their workplace.

In our work, we are often so caught up in the job that we forget to look after ourselves. We skip lunch, eat at our desks, sit for hours and the stress builds up. Taking time out for wellness can help you recharge, stay fresh and healthy which will boost your productivity.

Thai Yoga Massage was developed many centuries ago, but many of its principles can be applied to living better in today’s working world. Here are five workplace wellness tips inspired by Thai massage

1. Get Fresh Air

If you’ve ever practised yoga, you’ll know that your breathing makes a tremendous difference to the way that your body responds to a session. This principle applies to Thai Yoga Massage but can be used throughout the day. Increased oxygen, enhanced mood and better sleep have all been attributed to getting fresh air.  Even a 10 minute walk can boost brain function and reduce stress. And if you can find somewhere that’s green, then all the better.

2. Stretch

Thai Yoga Massage uses deep stretch to boost circulation along the body’s natural energy lines. Increased circulation means more oxygen moving around the body in a more efficient way. This allows the body to heal, repair injuries and fight illness. So, while you may not be able to engage the deep stretch of Thai Yoga Massage at your desk, taking a moment in your day to stretch your arms, legs and back can give you a quick recharge with lasting effects.

3. Keep it Moving

When energy flows happily the whole body is refreshed, but when blockages occur it can be difficult to feel your best.  During a Thai Yoga Massage treatment, you will be placed on your back, your front, and each side to get the best movement and stretch for your wellbeing. It is a full body therapy that appreciates the importance of joint mobility and muscle flexibility in maintaining the healthy flow of energy in the body.  Sitting for long periods has been connected with health challenges like type 2 diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Researchers suggest that taking short, active breaks from sitting, every 30 minutes ‘engages your muscles and bones, and gives all our bodily functions a boost – a bit like revving a car’s engine.’

4. Quiet your Mind

Before the start of a Traditional Thai Yoga Massage session, your practitioner will pause for a moment to quietly meditate, wishing wellness unto you with the hope that you ‘will be happy and that any illness will be released’.  As a Thai Yoga Massage therapist, taking time out to quiet my mind helps me connect with my clients, centring myself and ensuring that my mind is focused and prepared. This simple gesture, the conscious quieting of the mind, takes seconds but can help eliminate stress before it manifests. With emails, phone calls, and constant notifications happening throughout the day, taking a moment to pause and breathe is a precious and valuable opportunity for self-care.

5. Make Time for the Gift of Wellness

Those who practice Thai Yoga Massage often refer to it as a ‘practical act of kindness’. During each massage therapy session, the aim is to convey a sense of wellness for the other person that recentres and revives them. As a recipient of the treatment, you are not making an indulgence so much as an investment in yourself. By making time to help yourself feel better now, you are saving a great deal of stress and hassle in the long run. So whether it’s a massage, an extra glass of water, a bit of a neck stretch while you’re waiting by the kettle or an extra five minutes of fresh air, make yourself a priority.

Revitalising Thai Yoga Massage Comes to Exeter CoLab Workspace

Thai Yoga Massage Exeter brings ancient Thai therapy to the workplace during a Taster Day on Monday 12 February. At the event, CoLab workers will have the chance to experience a free 30-minute massage to energize their working day.

During each half-hour session, clients will sample the fully clothed, oil-free bodywork that gently relaxes, stretches and opens the body. This holistic treatment combines teachings of yoga and mindfulness to rejuvenates as it heals. Through a sequence of rhythmic movements, gentle but firm pressure is applied to the whole body to release tension, increase circulation, and boost energy.

Massage therapist, Yarrow Wolfe,  is looking forward to sharing this unique massage therapy with staff from some of the city’s most engaging wellbeing charities. Wolfe says, “ Traditional Thai massage is believed to have been developed by the Buddha’s physician to release the body from tension and prevent illness, leaving the mind freer to cultivate the qualities of mindfulness and compassion, it’s no surprise that when we are grounded in our bodies our minds are clearer! Of Wellness and Beginning Anew

‘…the practice of beginning anew can be done at every moment of our daily life. It can be done at 10  o’clock, it can be done at noon, and it can be done even at 11pm. One hour before the new day begins. You know that when you go to sleep, you are about to sink into your sleep and you tell yourself: “This has not been a good day for me.” So I give up and I hope that tomorrow will be a better day. And going to sleep in that state of mind is not good. Even if you have only two or three minutes to end your day, you should be able to practice beginning anew. Because these two or three minutes are very important. They will be able to help you to start the next day in a much better way. ‘ – Thich Nhat Hanh

As we welcome a new year, we can take time to recognise that there is always an opportunity for renewal within ourselves. One can begin the practice of becoming more mindful, compassionate, restful, or peaceful at any time. It can be a simple act of taking a moment out of your day to pause and concentrate on your breathing or a to make a start on a new endeavour, but it can be done.

Traveling through this life, our bodies endure much toil and stress. Through sports, work, childbirth, illness or injury, we start to see aches and pains arise which become a part of our daily realities.  We come to accept limited mobility, regular back pains and even tension headaches as part and parcel of our existence or simply ‘a part of getting older’. It is easily done but to accept this is to forget that we have the ability to ‘begin anew’ at any time or age.

Relief from back pain, joint stiffness, muscle ache and tension opens up opportunities for new experiences and therefore new perspectives because a change within yourself is also a change in your world.

Recipients of Thai Yoga Massage, with its union of Buddhist mindfulness and yogic physicality based on ancient principles, often describe the treatments as part of a journey of renewal. After two sessions, one of my clients explained ‘I felt like I was walking taller and my body was reset to factory settings’. Other clients describe feeling energised and more balanced after a Thai Yoga Massage session.

8 years of Thai Yoga Massage

8 years of Thai Yoga Massage

It has now been 8 years since I began my journey with Thai Yoga Massage, in those 8 years I have grown to appreciate the critical importance of self care and the consequences of failing to prioritize my wellbeing.

These days my passion is to help and inspire others to find ways to fit wellbeing practices into their busy lives. The rate of burnout amongst my peers over the last decade has been alarming, my peers are women between the age of 35 and 60, what is most disturbing is how few feel empowered to manage and often even talk about the exhaustion that so many of us feel, obviously when you are exhausted the last thing you feel able to do is take on the job of dealing with your exhaustion. All too often a trip to the doctor leaves us feeling that there is nothing that can be done and that it is just a normal part of life, our age and our time to feel exhausted.

I do not claim to have all the answers and there are many ways that the scientific world will shut down those of us who speak up with suggestions that are not proven by science, but I feel its my duty as a human to share the things that have worked to help me through my own battles with exhaustion and breakdowns, both large and small, mental and physical. I am eternally grateful to the holistic healthcare practitioners who shared with me all of what has brought me back from a hypothyroid induced breakdown 4 years ago to a place where I feel my clarity and passion for life has been restored.

So this is my first blog about the building blocks that have supported and continue to support my recovery and I want to start by simply introducing a biggie, supporting the nervous system, the intricate web of chemical, neurological and physical matter that drives the symphony that is our experience of reality.

I lightly call myself a Parasympathetic Paramedic, the parasympathetic nervous system is the part of our miraculous body that comes into being when we are feeling safe. When we are experiencing life through its lens we can ‘rest and digest’.

When I practice Thai Yoga Massage I am praying and giving thanks because I have an opportunity to offer some rest to a person whose nervous system is living in this frantic world. I have been learning about the nervous system from teachers and from the experience of it dictating how I experience each moment.

My most constant teacher has been Tara Brach whose teachings are about kindness, when we practice kindness to ourselves we are doing something radical, we are turning towards our ability to ‘tend and befriend’ and ‘rest and digest’, the direct polar opposite to ‘fight, flight, freeze’ which created stress hormones and inflammation in our bodies,  our relationships and  our world.

I cannot think of a better way to spend my life than to call in more of the great things that happen when we humans can access a way to land into our bodies, rest a while, know that it is possible to rest and how radically it changes how we feel about everything.

For now will leave you with a poem that has encouraged me to stop and rest countless times over the last 2 years, it is a practice that has endless distractions and responsibilities competing for its space but even if 10 minutes of sitting still is all I have managed to give to myself in a week, this poem has often been there for me, I hope it can be there for you too…

Let go of what is passed.

Let go of what may come.

Let go of what is happening now.

Don’t try to figure anything out.

Don’t try to make anything happen.

Relax, right now and rest.

Another easy detox technique!!

Dry Skin brushing is a really satisfying way to feel good in your skin, I feel more alive and clear when I do this, I do it whenever I feel like I need something to shift, often around pmt time. It reminds me of the feeling I get when I have had an invigorating swim in the ocean-except its a whole lot warmer!

Mobilising lymph is something really positive to do for your body, sitting at a computer or driving can restrict the lymphs ability to shift out toxins.

 So – buy a natural bristle brush (mine has a removable handle which is really useful, I think I got it in superdrug, they are also sold in Boots or a health food shop or on ebay) set aside 4 minutes to watch the video and give it a try!
